Carlsbad Caverns

The Surrounding Area

We got to see the North Chihuahuan Desert and the Guadalupe Mountains. We got some great shots.

The Visitors Center

If you’re in this part of New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns is a must do. For only $12 per person, you can take either the elevator to the Big Room, or you can walk down the natural entrance. We walked down the natural entrance.

Trail and entrance

The Descent

We went 750 feet below the Earth’s surface. At some points it’s pretty steep. Definitely wear your tennis shoes, bring a flashlight, and be careful. Also, we should note that if you are claustrophobic or don’t like the idea of being underground, you may want to just take the elevator down the to Big Room and get back up as soon as possible. Michelle was brave and made it to the elevator to go back up, but it was scary at some points for her. While she is glad she walked the natural entrance, I don’t think I’m ever going to get her in a cave again. Below are the rest of the pictures from inside the caverns. Michelle would like for me to note that she was laughing from fear and hysteria, not happiness.

The Exit of the Bats

Every summer thousands of Brazilian Free-Tailed Bats make the caverns their home. Each evening, there is a mass exodus as they go in search of food. Most people view the exodus from the amphitheater located at the entrance of the caves. However, electronics of all sorts are forbidden. Since we desperately wanted a video, we viewed from the parking lot just above and to the right of the entrance. We were not alone. Several others had the same idea.
